The purpose of the survey is to help the Data Visualization Society and the broader data visualization community understand the state of data visualization, the people who make it, the challenges they face, what can help practitioners, and where the field is headed.

2022

The 2022 Data Visualization SOTI Survey has responses to 70+ questions and was taken by over 1,500 people. It covers professional details like roles and tasks, tools and charts, experience, compensation, work contexts, challenges and changes, and more, plus demographic details. Naturally, we want to visualize it!

2021

The Data Visualization: State of the Industry Survey 2021 was run by the Data Visualization Society and had 2,181 responses to over 60 questions.

2020

The Annual Data Visualization Community Survey for 2020 was run by the Data Visualization Society. It has responses to 50+ questions and was taken by over 1,700 people. The survey was re-designed to be inclusive of different types of practitioners including those who work full time for organizations in primarily data visualization roles, freelancers, students, teachers and hobbyists. Respondents were given different sets of questions tailored to their roles depending on what type (or multiple types) of practitioner they identified as.

2019

The Annual Data Visualization Community Survey for 2019 was run by the Data Visualization Society. It has responses to 50+ questions and was taken by over 1,350 people. It covers professional data visualization details like salary and hourly compensation, tool use, location, demographic data, audiences, organizational structure.
