Data Visualization Society (DVS) provides website visitors and members with different services and benefits, some of which require us to collect and process your personal data.

All of this information is stored securely by us and not sold to third parties. We share this data with select platforms used by DVS, such as Slack and Mailchimp, to provide you with the benefits that are part of your membership.

This privacy policy will explain how the Data Visualization Society (hereinafter: DVS) uses the personal data we collect from you when interacting with our organization. It explains what personal information we collect and how we use it.

DVS collects the following data:

  • Information about how you interact with DVS (event attendance, messages you share, etc.)

Usage Data is collected automatically when using the Service. When you access DVS by or through a mobile device, We may collect certain information automatically, including, but not limited to, the type of mobile device you use, your mobile device unique ID, the IP address of your mobile device, your mobile operating system, the type of mobile Internet browser you use, unique device identifiers and other diagnostic data. We may also collect information that your browser sends whenever you visit our website by or through a mobile device.

You directly provide the DVS with most of the data we collect. We collect data and process data when you:

  • Visit the DVS website

  • Register as a member of the DVS via this website.

  • Have registered as a member in the past.

  • Subscribe to our newsletter

  • Engage on one or more of our platforms, such as Slack

  • Voluntarily complete a survey or provide feedback on any of our message boards or via email.

  • Use or view our website via your browser’s cookies, or follow links from our newsletter.

How will we use your data?

DVS collects your data so that we can:

  • Manage your membership.

  • Provide you with access to our platforms (e.g. Slack) and to the benefits that are part of your membership.

  • Email you with information relevant to you as a member, including regular newsletters.

  • Learn how to improve our communications and website browsing experience.

If you are a member of DVS, we will share your data with the following third parties in order to provide you with the benefits included in your membership:

  • Slack (to provision you with an account in the DVS Slack Workspace)

  • Mailchimp (to sign you up for the DVS newsletter)

  • Stripe (for payment processing)

  • MemberSpace (to enable access to members-only pages on the website, such as the Member Portal)

  • CommunityBox (to enable access to the member directory for paid members)

  • Google Analytics (to analyze website usage)

We do not share your data with third parties beyond those listed above. We will never sell your data to third parties.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a web analytics service offered by Google that tracks and reports website traffic. Google uses the data collected to track and monitor the use of the DVS website. This data is shared with other Google services. Google may use the collected data to contextualize and personalize the ads of its own advertising network. You can opt-out of having made your activity on the DVS website available to Google Analytics by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. The add-on prevents the Google Analytics JavaScript (ga.js, analytics.js and dc.js) from sharing information with Google Analytics about visits activity.

How do we store your data?

DVS securely stores your data in a database on a secure server.

DVS will keep your personal information for the duration of your DVS membership. If you cancel your membership, your personal data will be deleted within 2 months unless you have outstanding payments.

What are your data protection rights?

DVS would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights. Every user is entitled to the following:

The right to access – You have the right to request DVS for copies of your personal data. We may charge you a small fee for this service.

The right to rectification – You have the right to request that DVS correct any information you believe is inaccurate. You also have the right to request DVS to complete the information you believe is incomplete.

The right to erasure – You have the right to request that DVS erase your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to restrict processing – You have the right to request that DVS restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to object to processing – You have the right to object to DVS’s processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.

The right to data portability – You have the right to request that DVS transfer the data that we have collected to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.
